In this report, the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre analyzes the agro-industrial context in the state of Chiapas, Mexico. This sector employs thousands of agricultural workers, including migrants from Central America and indigenous people, in the production of coffee, cocoa and sugar cane.
The report contains:
- Analysis of the most prevalent labor rights abuses affecting migrant workers in the agricultural sector in Chiapas, based on publicly reported cases.
- Mapping of the main corporate actors in the export of coffee, cocoa and sugarcane produced in Chiapas, based on research conducted in collaboration with Empower.
- Assessment of human rights due diligence policies of major companies, in particular to prevent forced labor, as well as specific measures to ensure decent working conditions for migrant workers.
- Recommendations for companies and the Mexican government.
